Apple egpu thunderbolt7/9/2023 They should be compilable for any architecture. Device drivers should contain no architecture-specific code, and will simply use an API provided by the kernel. PCI deals with read and writes to memory addresses, something which is agnostic to architecture. Anything PCI / PCIe does not care about the system architecture. Just as people assumed Thunderbolt was tied to X86 for a long time, there is absolutely no reason why it cannot work with any architecture, as demonstrated by the M1 Mac. Now, as somebody who knows more than average on this stuff and contributed in non-trivial ways to the PCI subsystem of the Linux kernel, I would like to discuss why I believe that there is no inherent limitation preventing the M1 Macs from getting eGPU support.įirstly, ARM has no inherent limitations. The eGPUs are detected but nothing is done: The biggest reason not to buy an M1 Mac is the missing eGPU support.
